Inpatient Wards

  • The Surgical Ward admits patients through the Surgical Clinic as well as casualties (road traffic accidents, assault cases or any other trauma patients). The presence of a Surgeon (CUAMM volunteer) in the Hospital has attracted many patients from outside the region thus increasing the expenses of the Hospital considering that the full cost of these interventions remains unaffordable to the people.

As in all inpatient departments a doctor is available 24 hours/day and the nursing care uninterrupted, a team of dedicated and skilled Staff.

1,128 minor and 1,016 major operations were done last year (2011-212) and 30% of these are emergency operations. The surgical ward takes care of patients with surgical conditions which include laminectomy, craniotomy, septoplasty, appendectomy, hysterectomy, maxillofacial surgery among others.

Of course this ward works closely together with the theatre team in our hospital. Many of the patients are suffering from accidents on the road of Karamoja and still we have regular patients with gunshot wounds, however the security situation in Karamoja has greatly improved compared to a few years ago.

Especially the children in this department are handled with extra care and attention, we then try to do our best to avoid amputation and often reconstructive procedures are done on them to greatly improve the lives of the patients.

As with all departments in our hospital, patients come very often too late. This means operations are very complex and sometimes risky for the patient. We put extra attention in counselling to stress to the general public not to wait to long since this puts their live at risk.
